Frequently asked questions

What is a tick in futures? +

A tick is the smallest price increment a futures contract can move. Each contract has a fixed dollar value per tick: for the E-mini S&P 500 (ES) one tick is 0.25 index points and is worth $12.50 per contract.

How do I calculate futures profit and loss? +

P&L = (exit − entry) ÷ tick size × tick value × number of contracts, with the sign flipped for a short. Equivalently, points moved × point value × contracts.

What's the difference between E-mini and Micro contracts? +

Micro contracts are one-tenth the size of their E-mini counterparts. MES moves $1.25 per tick versus $12.50 for ES, which makes micros useful for smaller accounts and for scaling in and out.

Are these contract specs current? +

They're the standard exchange specifications for each contract, which rarely change. Fees, margin, and any broker-specific multipliers aren't included, so confirm with your broker before trading.
