How to use Fibonacci retracements
Retracements help answer one question: after a strong move, where might a pullback stop? Pick a clear swing, from the bottom of the move to the top in an uptrend, and the calculator marks the classic levels in between.
- Find a clean swing. The move should be obvious on the chart, not a few choppy candles.
- Watch 38.2% to 61.8%. That's the zone where healthy trends most often pause and resume.
- Wait for a reaction. A level is a place to watch, not a reason to buy. Look for a reversal candle there; the candlestick pattern guide covers the common ones.
- Use extensions for targets. If the trend resumes, 127.2% and 161.8% are common places to take profit.
Frequently asked questions
How are Fibonacci retracement levels calculated? +
Take the distance between a swing high and swing low, multiply it by each ratio (23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, 78.6%), and measure that distance back from the end of the move. In an uptrend: level = high − (high − low) × ratio. In a downtrend: level = low + (high − low) × ratio.
Which Fibonacci level is most important? +
Traders watch the 38.2%, 50%, and 61.8% levels most closely. The 61.8% level, the "golden ratio", is often treated as the last line of defense for a healthy pullback. 50% isn't a Fibonacci ratio, but it's included because markets so often retrace about half a move.
How are extension levels calculated here? +
Extensions project the full swing beyond its end, measured from the start of the move. In an uptrend, the 161.8% extension is low + (high − low) × 1.618. They're commonly used as profit targets once price breaks past the prior high (or low).
Do Fibonacci levels actually work? +
They work partly because so many traders watch them, which turns them into self-fulfilling areas of interest. Treat them as zones to watch for a reaction, ideally lined up with other support/resistance, not as exact prices that must hold.
