How trailing drawdown actually works
Say you start a $50,000 evaluation with a $2,500 trailing drawdown. Your liquidation level starts at $47,500. Make $1,000 and your peak becomes $51,000, so the level moves up to $48,500. Give that $1,000 back and you're at $50,000 with only $1,500 of room, even though you're flat on the account.
That's the trap: profits you don't keep still tighten the rope. Once the level reaches its lock point (often the starting balance), it stops moving and the account behaves like a static drawdown from there.
Sizing for the room you have
A good habit is sizing each trade off your room left, not your account size. If you have $1,500 of room, risking $750 a trade means two losers end the account. Plug your room into the position size calculator or, for futures, the tick value calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between static and trailing drawdown? +
A static drawdown sets the liquidation level once, at starting balance minus the max drawdown, and it never moves. A trailing drawdown follows your highest balance upward, so every new high raises the level you can't fall below. Trailing is stricter: giving back profits counts against you.
What does it mean when the trailing drawdown locks? +
Many firms stop trailing once the liquidation level reaches your starting balance (or a small amount above it). After that it stays fixed. The "stops trailing at" setting controls this; choose "never" if your account keeps trailing indefinitely.
End-of-day vs intraday trailing? +
End-of-day trailing only updates the peak from closing balances. Intraday trailing updates from your highest balance including open profit during the day, which is stricter. To model intraday trailing here, enter each day's peak and close as two separate entries (e.g. +900 then −400).
Are these the exact rules of my prop firm? +
Probably close, but check. Firms differ on whether drawdown trails intraday or end-of-day, where it locks, and how daily loss limits reset. Set the options to match your firm's rulebook, and always defer to the firm's own dashboard.
